Built for Prince Edward Island

Salt air, storms and wet snow. A roof that cannot rust.

Maritimes weather is salt air and fog on the coast, Atlantic winter storms and post-tropical storms, and winters that freeze, thaw and freeze again under wet snow. Here is what an Interlock® aluminum roof does about each, and where it has limits.

Salt air

Aluminum cannot rust

On an island, salt air is not only a shoreline concern: wind carries salt spray and fog well inland. Salt is what wears out steel roofing once its coating is breached. Aluminum reacts with oxygen to form a thin, tough oxide layer that seals the metal against further corrosion and re-forms if scratched. There is no steel core in an Interlock® panel to rust, in Charlottetown or on the north shore.

Storms

Fiona, and the next storm

Hurricane Fiona struck Atlantic Canada on September 24, 2022 and caused over $800 million in insured damage, the most costly extreme weather event ever recorded in the region. On PEI, storm surges of nearly two metres hit the beaches at Cavendish–North Rustico, Brackley–Dalvay and Greenwich. Interlock panels lock to each other on all four sides with the fasteners concealed, and wind resistance is warranted to 193 km/h (120 mph) installed to manufacturer specification. No roof is storm-proof: hurricane-force wind damage is a matter for your home insurance, and it is excluded from our labour warranty.

Freeze-thaw

Melt, refreeze, repeat, under heavy wet snow

An Island winter crosses the freezing mark again and again, often with rain on snow. Each cycle loosens asphalt granules and curls shingles; cedar takes on water that freezes in the grain. Aluminum absorbs nothing. Interlock panels weigh roughly 2 to 3.5 kg per square metre, a fraction of concrete tile, which leaves the structure's capacity for wet snow, and smooth aluminum lets snow slide, so we plan snow guards over entries, walkways and the driveway at the quote.

Ice dams

We look at the attic, not just the roof

Ice dams form when heat escaping into the attic melts snow that refreezes at the cold eaves. No roof covering stops that on its own, and ice damming is excluded from the material warranty. At the estimate we look at insulation and ventilation with you and tell you what we see.

Cottages

Cottages and seasonal homes

A cottage on the north shore or a seasonal home in Kings County can sit empty from fall to spring, through the worst of the weather. Aluminum has nothing to re-stain, re-seal or rot between seasons, and the panels are light enough for older cottage framing.

Finish

A finish made to keep its colour

The Alunar® finish is warranted for 30 years and has CRRC-rated solar reflectance from 0.25 to 0.44 depending on colour, and thermal emittance from 0.83 to 0.86.

What matters where you live

Charlottetown, Stratford, Cornwall, North Wiltshire and Hunter River: older city neighbourhoods, newer suburbs and the farmland around them. Charlottetown has more Interlock® roofs in our job book than any other Island community.

Older homes

The look of slate or cedar on an older house or a farmhouse, at roughly 2 to 3.5 kg per square metre.

Condominium boards

One profile and colour across a complex, with the product documents and warranty terms a condominium board asks for under PEI's Condominium Act.

Storm wind

Panels locked on four sides; wind warranted to 193 km/h installed to manufacturer specification. Hurricane-force damage is a matter for home insurance.

Ice dams

They start in the attic. We look at insulation and ventilation with you at the estimate.

Why aluminum, for PEI metal roofing

Why Island homeowners choose aluminum. And who stands behind it.

    Farmhouses

    Farmhouses, barns and outbuildings

On a PEI farm the house, the barn and the shop can share one profile and colour. Interlock's Slate, Cedar Shingle and Shake profiles keep the look of an old Island farmhouse at roughly 2 to 3.5 kg per square metre, a fraction of concrete tile or natural slate, and every profile needs a minimum 3/12 roof slope. We confirm yours at the consultation.

    Older homes

Older homes in Charlottetown and the towns

Older homes in Charlottetown, Summerside and the smaller towns can have steep pitches, dormers or more than one layer of old roofing. Cedar shingles and shakes always come off; a single layer of asphalt may be roofed over only if an inspection finds it suitable. Ice dams start with heat escaping into the attic, so we look at insulation and ventilation with you as well.

    Condos

    Condominium complexes

Under PEI's Condominium Act the board of directors of the condominium corporation usually decides on the roof, often with a reserve fund study in hand. We give boards one profile and colour across every building, the product documents they ask for, and both warranties in writing.

    One company

One installer for the Island, one set of warranties

We install every roof ourselves. Our office is in Dartmouth, NS, and it serves Prince Edward Island along with Nova Scotia and New Brunswick; there is no PEI office, so consultations are at your home or on Zoom. The manufacturer's Guardian Lifetime Limited Material Warranty and our 10 Year Limited Labour Warranty come with the roof, and after the install, service comes from the same company.

    Recycled

    Up to 95% recycled aluminum

    All of our answers ↗

Who installs Interlock metal roofing on PEI?

We do. Maritime Metal Roofing Ltd. is the certified Interlock® roofing contractor for the Maritimes, including Prince Edward Island. The company was founded in 2007 and works from one office in Dartmouth, NS, that serves the Island; there is no PEI office, and consultations are at your home or on Zoom. Interlock® roofs have been going on PEI homes since 1995. The panels are made in Canada by Interlock Roofing at its plant in Delta, BC. We are BBB Accredited with an A+ rating, Baeumler Approved, a Metal Roofing Alliance member, and winners of a 2026 GuildQuality GuildMaster Award.

Will an aluminum roof stand up to salt air on PEI?

Yes: aluminum cannot rust. It reacts with oxygen to form a thin, tough oxide layer that seals the metal against further corrosion and re-forms if scratched, so there is no steel core to rust once a coating is breached. On an island, wind carries salt spray and fog inland, so that matters in Charlottetown as much as on the north shore. The Alunar® finish on the panels carries a 30 Year coating warranty.

How does a metal roof handle storms like Fiona on PEI?

Hurricane Fiona came ashore in Atlantic Canada on September 24, 2022. According to the Insurance Bureau of Canada it caused over $800 million in insured damage, the most costly extreme weather event ever recorded in Atlantic Canada, and Environment and Climate Change Canada reports storm surges of nearly two metres on PEI beaches at Cavendish–North Rustico, Brackley–Dalvay and Greenwich. Interlock panels lock to each other on all four sides with the fasteners concealed, and wind resistance is warranted to 193 km/h (120 mph) installed to manufacturer specification. No roof is storm-proof: damage from hurricane-force winds is a matter for your home insurance, and hurricane-force winds and wind storms are excluded from our 10 Year Limited Labour Warranty.

Which parts of PEI does peiroofing.com cover?

All of Prince Edward Island, in four regions: Charlottetown and Central PEI (Charlottetown, Stratford, Cornwall, North Wiltshire and Hunter River); Summerside and West PEI (Summerside, Kensington, Miscouche, Tyne Valley, Alberton and Tignish); the North Shore and Cavendish (Cavendish, North Rustico, Stanley Bridge, St. Peter's Bay and Morell); and Eastern PEI (Souris, Montague, Murray River, Murray Harbour and Three Rivers). Nova Scotia is at novascotiaroofing.com and New Brunswick at newbrunswickroofing.com. Same company, same Dartmouth office, same crews and warranties.

What warranties come with a metal roof on PEI?

Two, in writing. The manufacturer, Interlock Roofing, gives the Guardian Lifetime Limited Material Warranty on the aluminum material and its factory finish: it runs for as long as the original purchaser owns the home, is transferable once, and excludes workmanship. We, Maritime Metal Roofing Ltd., give a 10 Year Limited Labour Warranty on the workmanship of the installation, covering Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island. The labour warranty is not transferable and excludes hurricane-force winds, wind storms, hail, ice damming, and snow and ice shedding.

How much does a metal roof cost on PEI?

Our metal roof cost page shows what Maritimes homeowners actually paid us, from our own 2025 and 2026 contracts; PEI doesn't yet have enough recent contracts for figures of its own. Treat them as a rough guide only: prices vary from job to job with structural and other conditions, and an in-home roof consultation is required for accurate pricing. The biggest factors are roof area, pitch and complexity (valleys, dormers, skylights and chimneys), what has to come off, the profile you choose, and options such as snow guards. The consultation is on Zoom or at your home, you get a fixed price in writing, and any current offer is shown on this page.
