The company & where we work
Who we are, our Dartmouth office, and how we serve Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island.
Who is Maritime Metal Roofing Ltd.?
We are the certified Interlock® roofing contractor for the Maritimes, founded on January 4, 2007, with one office in Burnside, Dartmouth, that serves Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island. We install one roofing system, the Interlock® aluminum roof, made in Canada by Interlock Roofing Ltd. at its plant in Delta, BC, and installed in the Maritimes by our own Maritimes company. We are a BBB Accredited Business with an A+ rating, Baeumler Approved, a Metal Roofing Alliance member and a GuildQuality GuildMaster Award winner in 2026.
Which parts of the Maritimes do you install in?
All three Maritime provinces. In Nova Scotia: the Halifax Region, Annapolis Valley, South Shore, North Shore, Cape Breton, Eastern Shore and Western Nova Scotia. In New Brunswick: Greater Moncton and the Southeast, Greater Saint John, the Fredericton Capital Region, the Fundy Coast, the Southwest, the Upper Saint John River and Woodstock corridor, and Miramichi. On Prince Edward Island: Charlottetown and Central PEI, Summerside and West PEI, the North Shore and Cavendish, and Eastern PEI. Same company and the same warranties everywhere. We don't serve Newfoundland and Labrador.
Do you have an office in Halifax, Moncton or Charlottetown?
No. We have one office, at 101 Thornhill Dr #105, Dartmouth, NS B3B 1S2, in the Burnside business park, and it serves all three provinces. You don't need to come to the office: consultations happen at your home or on Zoom. Homeowners in Moncton, Saint John, Fredericton, Charlottetown and Summerside get the same company, the same warranties and a fixed price in writing as homeowners in Halifax and Dartmouth.
Are you the same company as the manufacturer?
No. Interlock Roofing Ltd. manufactures the panels at its plant in Delta, BC, and issues the Guardian Lifetime Limited Material Warranty on the material. Maritime Metal Roofing Ltd. is the Maritimes company, based in Dartmouth, that sells and installs them and gives you the 10 Year Limited Labour Warranty on the installation. The two work closely, but they are separate companies with separate warranties.
Is an Interlock roof really made in Canada?
Yes. Interlock® panels are manufactured by Interlock Roofing Ltd. at its plant in Delta, BC, and installed in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island by our own Maritimes company, Maritime Metal Roofing Ltd.. Made in Canada, installed in the Maritimes: the roof never crosses a border on its way to your home, and the company that installs it is the one that stands behind the workmanship. We are Canadian owned and operated.
How many Interlock roofs are there in the Maritimes?
Our job book records 5,581 completed Interlock® roofs across the Maritimes: 3,734 in Nova Scotia, 1,417 in New Brunswick and 430 on Prince Edward Island. Interlock® roofs have been going on Maritime homes since 1995, and Maritime Metal Roofing Ltd. was founded in 2007. Dartmouth and Halifax have the most, followed by Fredericton, Saint John, Moncton, Charlottetown, Truro and Bridgewater. The provincial sites show the record town by town.
Do you have a separate website for each province?
Yes. This site covers the whole Maritimes: the company, the roof, the warranties, cost and these questions. Each province also has its own site with its town pages and local install record: novascotiaroofing.com for Nova Scotia, newbrunswickroofing.com for New Brunswick and peiroofing.com for Prince Edward Island. All four are the same company, with the same office, the same roof and the same warranties.
How do I check that a roofer is licensed and insured?
Ask for proof rather than taking it on trust. The checks that matter are workers' compensation coverage, liability insurance, a municipal business licence where your town requires one, a written contract and a warranty you can read in full. Ask any roofer, us included, for a clearance letter from WCB Nova Scotia, WorkSafeNB or WCB PEI and an insurance certificate. If the contract is sold at your door, the seller should be a licensed direct seller under your province's rules.
Where can I read reviews of your work?
On our reviews page, which shows reviews from Maritimes homeowners only, with nothing borrowed from another province or state. Our Baeumler Approved and BBB profiles are public too, and the BBB profile shows complaints and our responses. GuildQuality, which lists us as Interlock Metal Roofing — Halifax, gave us a GuildMaster Award in 2026, and we are listed on HomeStars.
How do I contact you?
Call (782) 825-6416 or email scott@peiroofing.com. The office is at 101 Thornhill Dr #105, Dartmouth, NS B3B 1S2, and our hours are on the contact page. Consultations are by appointment, at your home or on Zoom. Existing customers with a service or labour warranty question can email mprservice@interlockroofing.com, and Guardian material warranty claims go to guardian@interlockroofing.com.
Profiles, colours & materials
Choosing a look, and how aluminum compares with steel and copper.
What roof profiles can I choose from?
Six: Slate, Cedar Shingle, Shake, Mediterranean Tile, Standing Seam and Solid Copper. Slate is the profile chosen most today, and Shake and Cedar Shingle are the usual choice when an owner wants to keep the look of a wood roof. Every profile needs a minimum 3/12 roof slope. We bring samples to the consultation, at your home or on Zoom, so you can see each one against your house.
How long does a metal roof last?
Long enough that the warranty terms are the better guide than any slogan. Aluminum does not rust or rot and absorbs no water to freeze and thaw inside it, and Interlock® roofs have been going on Maritime homes since 1995. The written terms are the warranties: the manufacturer's Guardian Lifetime Limited Material Warranty covers the material and finish while the original purchaser owns the home, and a transferred warranty runs to 50 years from installation. Our metal roof lifespan page goes into more detail.
Is an Interlock roof aluminum or steel?
Aluminum. The roofs we install are heavy-gauge aluminum, and Solid Copper is the other option. The difference matters on the coast because aluminum contains no iron, so it does not rust; it forms a protective oxide layer instead, while steel depends on its coating to keep salt air away. The manufacturer's ICC-ES evaluation report lists 3105-H24 and 3003-H24 aluminum alloys for the shingle, shake and tile panels, and the aluminum has up to 95% recycled content.
Which profile is most common in the Maritimes?
On older roofs, the legacy Interlock Shingle: it is the most common profile in our Maritimes job book, unlike in the rest of Canada, but it is no longer sold. Of today's line-up, Slate is by far the most installed, Cedar Shingle and Shake are the usual choice when a wood roof is being replaced, Mediterranean Tile suits houses designed around a tile roof, and Standing Seam gives a clean, modern line. We bring samples of every profile to the consultation.
We have an older Interlock Shingle roof. Can you help with it?
Yes, start with our service team. The legacy Interlock Shingle profile is no longer sold, so email mprservice@interlockroofing.com with your address, a description and photos taken from the ground, and we will tell you what can be done. If the roof was installed by us, the labour warranty terms on your certificate apply; the Guardian material warranty is the manufacturer's, and claims go to guardian@interlockroofing.com.
What colours are available?
Nine: Solid Copper, Copper Penny, Hunter Green, Black, Deep Charcoal, Musket Grey, Tile Red, Colonial Brown and Tudor Brown. The finish is the Alunar® coating system, a 70% PVDF coating certified to AAMA 2605, backed by a 30 Year Alunar® Coating Warranty, and the colours are rated by the Cool Roof Rating Council (CRRC). We bring samples to your consultation, because colour on a roof reads differently in sea fog and bright sun than on a screen.
Will it look like real slate or cedar?
From the street it reads as a slate, shake or shingle roof. The Shake profile has deep, hand-split shadow lines, and the Cedar Shingle profile has the flatter look of a sawn cedar roof, the look of many shingled Maritimes homes and cottages. The best way to judge is on your own house: we bring samples and colours to the consultation so you can hold them up against your siding and trim.
Do you install aluminum shingles?
Yes. Slate, Cedar Shingle, Shake and Mediterranean Tile are all interlocking aluminum profiles. Each piece locks to its neighbours on all four sides with the fasteners concealed, so from the street the roof reads as slate, cedar or tile rather than sheet metal. They are made in Canada by Interlock Roofing Ltd. and installed in the Maritimes by our own company, with a fixed price in writing after a free consultation.
How heavy is an Interlock roof?
Roughly 2 to 3.5 kg per square metre depending on profile, a fraction of the weight of concrete tile. That leaves the structure's capacity for heavy, wet Maritimes snow, which matters on an older wood-frame house. We still check the deck and framing at the consultation and put anything that needs attention in the written quote.
What is the minimum roof slope for an Interlock roof?
3/12. Every Interlock profile needs a minimum 3/12 slope, and the manufacturer's ICC-ES evaluation report lists 3:12 with code-compliant self-adhered underlayment. If part of your roof is flatter than that, such as a porch, a shed dormer or a low addition, that section needs a different roofing system, and we will point it out at the consultation so it is dealt with in the written quote.
Is an aluminum roof environmentally friendly?
It has a strong case. The aluminum in Interlock panels has up to 95% recycled content, the panels are made in Canada rather than shipped in from overseas, and a roof that does not need replacing avoids the repeated tear-off waste of shorter-lived roofs. The colours are CRRC-rated, so their solar reflectance and thermal emittance are published.
Storms, wind & salt air
Wind ratings, salt air, post-tropical storms, and where insurance comes in.
Will an Interlock roof stand up to Maritimes storms?
It is built for wind and salt air, though no roof is immune to every storm. The panels lock to each other on all four sides with the fasteners concealed, and wind resistance is warranted to 193 km/h (120 mph) when installed to manufacturer specification. Aluminum forms a protective oxide layer and cannot rust, so salt spray has no steel core to attack. Damage from hurricane-force winds and wind storms is excluded from our labour warranty and is a matter for your home insurance. Hurricane Fiona in 2022 is a reminder: the Insurance Bureau of Canada calls it the most costly extreme weather event ever recorded in Atlantic Canada.
Does salt air corrode an aluminum roof?
Aluminum does not rust. It reacts with oxygen to form a thin, tough oxide layer that seals the metal against further corrosion and re-forms if it is scratched, which is why Interlock roofs are aluminum rather than steel. Salt air is highly corrosive to steel once its coating is scratched or cut. On the coast, rinse salt and dirt off from the ground with a hose now and then, as you would on any roof, and never use a pressure washer.
How did Hurricane Fiona affect the Maritimes?
Severely. Fiona struck the Maritimes on September 24, 2022, and the Insurance Bureau of Canada estimates insured damage at over $800 million, the most costly extreme weather event ever recorded in Atlantic Canada. Roofs that lost shingles let in water as well as wind. An Interlock roof's wind resistance is warranted to 193 km/h (120 mph) when installed to manufacturer specification, but hurricane-force wind damage is a matter for home insurance and is excluded from our labour warranty.
How does the roof handle wind-driven rain?
The panels lock to each other on all four sides with the fasteners concealed, so there is no exposed screw head or lifted tab for rain driven sideways by a coastal storm to get behind. Valleys, chimneys, skylights and walls are flashed as part of the roof, and those details matter as much as the panels, which is why workmanship is covered separately by our 10 Year Limited Labour Warranty. We look at every flashing detail at the consultation.
What impact rating do Interlock panels have?
UL 2218 Class 4, the top class in that impact test, as listed by Intertek (SPEC ID 33876) under Delta Building Products for the Diamond, Shingle and Slate, Shake and Tile panel families. For Class 4, a 51 mm (2-inch) steel ball is dropped from 6.1 m (20 feet) onto the roofing, and to pass it must show no tearing, fracturing, cracking or rupture. Large hail can still dent metal, and hail damage is a home insurance matter.
What should I do after a storm damages my roof?
Stay off the roof. Photograph any damage you can see from the ground, including gutters, siding and fallen branches, before anything is moved or cleaned up, and contact your insurer to start a claim. Then email mprservice@interlockroofing.com or call (782) 825-6416, and we will look at what needs repair and price it in writing. Hurricane-force winds, wind storms and impact of foreign objects are excluded from the labour warranty, so the repair is usually an insurance matter.
Does home insurance or the warranty cover storm damage?
Generally that is your home insurance, not the roof warranties. The labour warranty excludes hurricane-force winds, wind storms, hail and impact of foreign objects, and the manufacturer's material warranty excludes severe weather and Acts of God. Check your policy, photograph damage before anything is moved, and email mprservice@interlockroofing.com to have us assess the repair.
Can I use an insurance settlement toward an Interlock roof?
Ask your insurer, because the insurer decides what a claim pays for. If you would rather put the settlement toward an aluminum roof and pay the difference yourself, ask your insurer whether that is allowed under your policy before you sign anything. We give you a fixed price in writing that you can share with them. The decision on the claim is theirs and yours; we price and install the roof.
Warranty & service
What the Guardian and labour warranties cover, and how to reach service.
What warranties come with an Interlock roof in the Maritimes?
Two. The manufacturer, Interlock Roofing Ltd., gives the Guardian Lifetime Limited Material Warranty on the aluminum material and its factory finish. We, Maritime Metal Roofing Ltd., give a 10 Year Limited Labour Warranty on the workmanship of the installation, on one certificate (Form 5290 NS) that covers Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island. They are separate documents with separate terms, and you can read both in full before you buy.
What does "lifetime" mean in the Guardian warranty?
For as long as the original purchaser owns the home on which the roof was installed and remains the registered owner under the warranty. Coverage runs from the date of original installation. It is a limited warranty on the material and its factory finish; it does not cover installation workmanship, which is covered separately by our labour warranty.
How long is the labour warranty?
Ten years from the Substantial Completion Date on your certificate. It is issued by Maritime Metal Roofing Ltd., covers the workmanship of the installation, and stays in effect while a purchaser named on the certificate is the registered owner of, and lives at, the property. It takes effect once the contract is paid in full, and it is not transferable.
Can I transfer the warranty if I sell my home?
The Guardian material warranty transfers once, to the first subsequent registered owner, who receives coverage to 50 years from the original installation date. The transfer needs notice to the manufacturer with proof of purchase within 60 days of the change of ownership and a $300 transfer fee. Our 10 Year Limited Labour Warranty is not transferable.
Which warranty covers a leak?
It depends on where the water gets in. If the problem is in how the roof was installed, such as flashings, trim or a detail, it is a labour warranty matter for us. If it is a defect in the panels or their finish, it is a Guardian matter for the manufacturer. If you are not sure, email mprservice@interlockroofing.com first and we will tell you which applies.
How do I make a warranty claim?
For workmanship, contact us at mprservice@interlockroofing.com or the claims line on your certificate no later than 10 days after you find the issue, with your name, address, phone number, certificate number and a description. For the material, write to guardian@interlockroofing.com within 30 days of the issue becoming known, with your registration number, installation date, photos and contact details. If an inspection finds a home-maintenance issue rather than workmanship, a minimum $250 inspection fee may apply.
Do I need to register the Guardian warranty?
Yes, within 60 days of installation, using the registration form we supply. If you need another copy of the form, request one from policies@interlockgroup.com. Registration matters because a claim asks for your registration number, and a transfer to a new owner later works from the registered record.
What do the warranties not cover?
Read the exclusions before you sign. The material warranty excludes installation workmanship, severe weather and Acts of God, condensation, ice damming, normal wear including minor scratches and dents, and alterations, foot traffic or equipment added after installation. The labour warranty excludes, among others, hurricane-force winds, wind storms, hail, fire, lightning, impact of foreign objects, ice damming, snow and ice shedding, inadequate venting or insulation, pressure washing, and items such as solar added to the roof.
Can I read the warranties before I buy?
Yes, and we would rather you did. The Guardian warranty summary and the full 10 Year Limited Labour Warranty text are on our warranty pages, the Maritimes labour certificate (Form 5290 NS) is available as a PDF, and a free copy of the complete Guardian warranty is available from policies@interlockgroup.com. We also hand you the warranty documents with your quote.
Getting started & cost
Estimates, pricing and what happens first.
How much does a metal roof cost in the Maritimes?
It depends on your roof, so we price each house after a free consultation instead of publishing a number. The biggest factors are roof area, pitch and complexity (valleys, dormers, skylights and chimneys), what is under the old roof, the profile you choose, and options such as the Class A Fire Rated Available assembly or snow guards. Rural properties, island and shore locations and long drives change the logistics too. You get a fixed price in writing, and anything the deck needs goes into that quote, not into a change order later.
Why don't you publish a price per square foot?
Because a per-square-foot number would be wrong for most houses. Two homes on the same street can differ a lot in roof area, pitch and what is underneath the old roof, and those differences move the price more than the panels do. One consultation gets you a fixed price in writing for your house, and that is the number we stand behind. If you are comparing quotes, compare the system, the fasteners, the warranty terms and the contractor's coverage first, then the price.
How much does an Interlock roof cost?
An Interlock® roof is priced for your house, not from a price list: roof area, pitch, complexity, what has to come off, the profile and any options set the number. We measure the roof, look at the deck and framing where we can, go through profiles and colours with you, and give you a fixed price in writing. The consultation and the written price are free, with no obligation. Book one through the quote form or call (782) 825-6416.
Is the estimate free, and am I obligated to anything?
Yes, the estimate is free, and there is no obligation. Consultations are by appointment, at your home or on Zoom, with a visit to measure the roof and look at the deck. We go through profiles and colours with you using real samples and leave you with a fixed price in writing. What you do with it after that is up to you.
Can the consultation be on Zoom?
Yes. You can choose a consultation on Zoom or one at your home, wherever you are in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick or Prince Edward Island. On Zoom we go through the profiles, colours, warranties and your questions, which suits busy households, cottage owners who live elsewhere and families helping a parent from out of province. Either way, the roof is measured and the deck looked at before you get a fixed price in writing.
Will the price change after I sign?
No. The price in writing is the price. If we find something that needs attention, such as soft decking or framing that needs work, it goes into that written quote before you sign, not into a change order afterwards. That is why we look at the deck and framing where we can before we price the roof, which matters on older Maritimes homes.
Is a metal roof worth it compared with asphalt shingles?
For an owner who wants to stop re-roofing, usually yes, though it costs more up front than an asphalt re-roof. We install one roofing system and don't install asphalt, so if you're comparing us with asphalt you're comparing a roof you'll replace again with one that shouldn't need it. Interlock panels lock on all four sides with concealed fasteners, aluminum cannot rust or rot, and the Guardian Lifetime Limited Material Warranty covers the material and finish while the original purchaser owns the home. The trade-offs are the higher upfront price and the need for a trained installer.
Do you offer financing?
Only through promotions, and offers change. When a promotion includes payment terms, it is shown on our home page and financing page with its full conditions, eligible area and expiry date, and the terms you qualify for are written into your quote. We don't offer standing financing, so check the current offer or ask at your free consultation.
Where can I buy Interlock metal roofing in the Maritimes?
From us. Maritime Metal Roofing Ltd. is the certified Interlock® roofing contractor for the Maritimes, and we sell and install the system as a complete roof, so the manufacturer's material warranty and our labour warranty come with it. Book a free consultation through the quote form or call (782) 825-6416 for a fixed price in writing, wherever you are in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick or Prince Edward Island.
Fire ratings & wildfire
Class A assemblies, embers and FireSmart Canada guidance.
What is a Class A fire-rated roof assembly?
Class A is the highest fire classification for roof coverings under ASTM E108, and it rates a complete roof assembly rather than a covering alone; in Canada the matching standard is CAN/ULC-S107. The roof covering, underlayment and deck are tested together, which is why the same panel can carry different classifications on different assemblies. On our roofs, Class A Fire Rated Available, as a complete assembly: two layers of GAF VersaShield® over 12 mm (15/32-inch) plywood, per ASTM E108. When a roofer says their roof is Class A, ask which assembly the rating applies to.
Is an Interlock roof fire rated?
Class A Fire Rated Available, as a complete assembly. Under ASTM E108 a fire classification belongs to the assembly, not the panel; on our roofs Class A is achieved with two layers of GAF VersaShield® over 12 mm (15/32-inch) plywood. Aluminum itself does not ignite. If you want the Class A assembly, ask for it in your quote, where it is priced as a line item.
What roofing does FireSmart Canada recommend?
Class A. FireSmart Canada's roof fact sheet says Class A fire-rated roofing materials provide a high level of protection, lists asphalt-composition shingles, metal, and slate, clay or concrete tile as examples, and says to avoid wood shakes or shingles. No material earns that rating on its own; the rating belongs to the assembly. On our roofs, Class A Fire Rated Available, as a complete assembly: two layers of GAF VersaShield® over 12 mm (15/32-inch) plywood, and the aluminum does not ignite.
Are wildfires a real risk in Nova Scotia?
Yes. The Tantallon wildfire near Halifax, from May 28 to June 4, 2023, destroyed 151 homes and caused over $165 million in insured damage, according to the Insurance Bureau of Canada. Embers carried ahead of a fire land in gutters, vents and gaps at the roof edge, and a wood roof can catch. No roof is fireproof, but a Class A assembly and aluminum that does not ignite help, alongside the rest of the FireSmart guidance for the home ignition zone.
What else should I fix at the roof edge near the woods?
Gutters, vents and gaps. FireSmart Canada recommends gutters and downspouts made of non-combustible materials such as aluminum, copper or galvanized steel, and non-combustible vents with 3 mm screening or ASTM fire-rated vents. Keep gutters clear of needles and leaves, especially through spring and summer. We go through the gutters, vents and roof edges with you at the consultation.
Can I replace a cedar roof on a wooded lot and keep the look?
Yes. Interlock's Shake and Cedar Shingle profiles keep the cedar look in aluminum, which does not ignite, and Class A Fire Rated Available, as a complete assembly: two layers of GAF VersaShield® over 12 mm (15/32-inch) plywood, per ASTM E108. Cedar shingles and shakes always come off before the new roof goes on, so the old roof's condition and the deck underneath are checked and priced in your written quote.
Maritimes weather: snow, ice, rain & freeze-thaw
How the roof handles freeze-thaw, wet snow, ice, wind-driven rain and fog.
How does an aluminum roof handle freeze-thaw?
Well, because aluminum absorbs no water, so there is nothing in the panel for meltwater to soak into, freeze and expand. Maritimes winters swing above and below freezing again and again, with rain on snow and long shoulder seasons, so roofs go through melt and refreeze all winter. Interlock panels lock to each other on all four sides with the fasteners concealed, so there are no exposed screw heads for water and ice to work at. Flashings, valleys and gutters still have to drain, and we check those details at the consultation.
What wind speed is an Interlock roof rated for?
Wind resistance is warranted to 193 km/h (120 mph) when installed to manufacturer specification, under the manufacturer's Guardian Lifetime Limited Material Warranty. The panels lock to each other on all four sides with the fasteners concealed, which leaves no loose tab or edge for a gust to lift. Damage from severe weather and Acts of God is excluded from the material warranty, and hurricane-force winds and wind storms are excluded from our labour warranty, so read the exclusions before you buy.
How does a metal roof handle heavy snow?
It sheds it. Snow and ice can build up and release unexpectedly, so keep the release area under the eaves clear of people, cars and property through the winter. Snow guards over entries, decks, driveways and walkways restrict how much releases at once, and we price them as a line item. Ask where the snow will slide and where the guards go before the roof is ordered, not after the first slide. The panels weigh roughly 2 to 3.5 kg per square metre, which leaves the structure's capacity for heavy, wet snow.
Do you install snow guards?
Yes. Snow guards over entries, decks and walkways are priced as a line item in your written quote, and we plan their placement with you at the consultation. If you want guards added, removed or moved after the roof is finished, contact us to arrange it; that is a service call with charges, not a workmanship warranty item. Guards restrict how much snow releases at once, but they can also let snow build up on the roof.
Will a metal roof stop ice dams?
We won't promise that, and neither warranty does: ice damming is excluded from both the manufacturer's material warranty and our labour warranty. Ice dams come from heat loss. Warm air from the house melts snow on the upper roof, and the water refreezes at the colder eaves, which a thaw followed by a hard freeze can make worse. The fix lies in attic insulation, air sealing and ventilation. We look at those with you at the consultation; inadequate venting or insulation is also outside the labour warranty.
What is the best roofing material for Maritimes weather?
One that cannot rust in salt air, absorbs no water and has nothing exposed for wind or ice to work at. That is the case for interlocking aluminum: it forms a protective oxide layer instead of rusting, has no water to freeze inside it, is light enough to leave capacity for wet snow, locks on all four sides with concealed fasteners, and its wind resistance is warranted to 193 km/h (120 mph) when installed to manufacturer specification. Pair it with good attic insulation and ventilation, because no roofing material prevents ice dams on its own.
How does the finish hold up to salt, fog and sun?
The finish is the Alunar® coating system, a 70% PVDF coating certified to AAMA 2605, and it carries a 30 Year Alunar® Coating Warranty. Under the coating, the aluminum itself cannot rust, so a scratch does not start corrosion the way it can on steel. Keep the finish in good shape by rinsing salt and dirt off from the ground, never with a pressure washer, and by keeping foot traffic off the roof.
Is a metal roof energy efficient in summer?
The finish helps. Alunar® colours are rated by the Cool Roof Rating Council, so their solar reflectance and thermal emittance are published, and lighter colours reflect more of the sun. How much that changes your comfort through a Maritimes summer depends on your insulation, ventilation and the house itself, so we don't put a savings number on it. Ask to compare the CRRC values of the colours you like.
Is a metal roof noisy in the rain?
Not on a house. The manufacturer's guidance is that on a home with solid decking, underlayment, an attic and insulation, rain noise is comparable to asphalt shingles. The noisy-roof reputation comes from open-framed barns and sheds, where rain hits a bare sheet with nothing under it. Our installs go over a solid deck.
Will an aluminum roof rust?
No. Rust is corrosion of iron and steel, and aluminum contains no iron, so there is no rust to start at a scratch, a cut edge or a fastener hole, even in salt air. That is one reason Interlock roofs are aluminum rather than steel. The finish is the Alunar® coating system, backed by a 30 Year Alunar® Coating Warranty, and the Guardian Lifetime Limited Material Warranty covers the material. Rinse dirt and salt off from the ground now and then, as you would on any roof.
Do metal roofs attract lightning?
No. Lightning follows height, shape and isolation, not roof material, so it strikes the tallest point around: a tree, a pole, a chimney, a hilltop. The manufacturer cites the Metal Construction Association's technical guidance that a one-storey home with a metal roof is no more likely to be struck than the same home with asphalt. Lightning damage itself is excluded from the labour warranty and is a home insurance matter.
Can a metal roof get condensation?
Any roof can, and it is often mistaken for a leak. Condensation is caused by high humidity and a lack of ventilation, and damp, foggy Maritimes weather and a warm house under a cold roof test both. Keep the attic and other roof cavities well ventilated and the eaves free of blockage; if condensation persists, have a builder check ventilation, insulation and the vapour barrier. Condensation is excluded from the manufacturer's material warranty, and inadequate venting or insulation is excluded from the labour warranty.
Installation, timing & permits
Tear-off, scheduling, permits and the provincial building codes.
How long does a metal roof installation take?
There is no fixed figure, because timing depends on the stock of the profile and colour you choose, crew availability, permit approval where one is needed, weather, and the size and complexity of the roof. You get a realistic install window in writing at the estimate. Hips, valleys, dormers, skylights and chimneys each add flashing and time, and rural, island and shore properties add logistics.
Can a metal roof go over my existing shingles?
Only over a single layer of asphalt shingles, and only after inspection. Cedar shingles and shakes, concrete tile and natural slate always come off. With one layer of asphalt, we inspect first to see whether a roof-over is suitable, because problems such as rot can be hiding underneath, and they have to be dealt with before the new roof goes on. Whatever the inspection finds is written into your quote.
Do I need a permit to replace my roof?
It depends on your municipality and the work. Replacing roofing with similar materials can be treated differently from work that adds sheathing, changes rafters or alters the structure, and each municipality in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island sets out what needs a permit at your address. We confirm what your address needs before you sign, and the contract says who gets any permit.
Which building code applies to roofs in the Maritimes?
Your provincial building code, which in each of the three provinces is based on the National Building Code of Canada. Your municipality enforces it, so it is the local permit issuer, not the contractor, that decides how it applies to your project. Where structural work is part of the job, we confirm the requirements for your address before you sign.
Do you install on cottages, rural homes and island properties?
Yes, anywhere within the regions we serve in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island, including cottages on the shore and rural properties. Long driveways, steep lots, distance and access by water change the logistics, and we plan them at the consultation so they are reflected in your written price and install timing. If the property is wooded, ask about the Class A Fire Rated Available assembly while the roof is planned.
Can I put solar panels on an Interlock roof?
Talk to us before anything is mounted. Damage from equipment added to the roof after installation is excluded from the manufacturer's material warranty, and the installation of solar, antennas or other items on the roof is excluded from our labour warranty. Work on the roof by anyone other than us or our authorized representatives may also void the labour warranty, so bring us into the racking plan first.
Do you handle skylights, chimneys and gutters?
Skylights and chimneys are flashed as part of the roof, and each adds time that is reflected in the price. Bring up gutters at the consultation, so the roof edge, the gutters and where snow will slide are planned together. If your home is near the woods, ask about non-combustible gutters and screened vents while the roof work is planned.
Care & maintenance
What an aluminum roof needs, and what it doesn't.
What maintenance does an Interlock roof need?
Very little, but not none. Have the gutters cleaned regularly and have branches and other debris removed from the roof promptly. Rinse dirt, salt or mildew from the ground with a hose and a well-diluted non-abrasive detergent. Keep attic ventilation working and the eaves clear. Unlike cedar, there is no re-treating, and unlike asphalt, there is no granule loss to watch for.
Can I walk on my metal roof?
It is best avoided, for your safety and for the finish. Do what you can from the ground with long-handled tools, and hire a skilled professional for anything that needs roof access. Foot traffic after installation is excluded from the manufacturer's material warranty, and work by anyone other than us or our representatives may void the labour warranty, so contact us first.
Can I pressure wash a metal roof?
No. The use of high-pressure washing systems is excluded from our labour warranty. Clean the roof from the ground by lightly hosing it down with a well-diluted non-abrasive liquid detergent and a long-poled soft-bristle brush, and remove debris with a long rope or pole. How fast dirt and mildew build up depends on slope, shade, trees and how much sea fog and sun the roof gets.
Who do I call about storm damage or a fallen tree on my roof?
Email mprservice@interlockroofing.com or call (782) 825-6416. We can look at the damage and arrange the repair. Damage from wind storms, hurricane-force winds, falling objects and other Acts of God is excluded from both warranties, so it is usually a home insurance claim; photograph the damage before anything is moved.
Will the colour fade, and will I ever need to repaint?
No repainting is part of normal ownership. The factory finish is the Alunar® coating system, a 70% PVDF coating certified to AAMA 2605, and it carries a 30 Year Alunar® Coating Warranty. Keep the finish in good shape by cleaning from the ground with a hose and a mild detergent, never a pressure washer, and by keeping foot traffic off the roof.
Condominiums & townhouse complexes
For condo boards, property managers and townhouse owners in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island.
Can our condominium corporation replace its roofs with Interlock?
Yes, and the board usually leads it where the roofs are common elements. Nova Scotia's Condominium Act, New Brunswick's condominium statute (SNB 2009, c C-16.05) and Prince Edward Island's Condominium Act, with your declaration and bylaws, set out what is a common element and who repairs it. We can meet the board or the property manager, walk the roofs, and give a fixed price in writing, along with the product documents, colour samples and warranty terms the board and owners will ask for. One profile and one colour can run across every building in a complex.
Does a condo board need an owner vote to change the roofing material?
It can. In Prince Edward Island, section 17 of the Condominium Act requires a vote of members who own 80 per cent of the common elements, or more if the declaration says so, for a substantial addition, alteration or improvement. Nova Scotia and New Brunswick set their own rules in their Acts and in each corporation's declaration and bylaws. Whether a new roofing material is a repair or an improvement is a question for your condominium lawyer, so get legal advice before the board decides how to approve and fund it.
How does a roof replacement fit our reserve fund?
It depends on the province. Nova Scotia's Condominium Regulations call for a comprehensive reserve-fund study, covering at least 20 years, every five years. In New Brunswick, Service New Brunswick says corporations with more than 10 units complete a reserve fund study every 10 years and update it every three years. Prince Edward Island's Condominium Act does not require a reserve fund. A fixed price in writing for the roofs, with the warranty documents, gives the board real numbers to plan with.
Can one owner in a condominium get an Interlock roof?
Only if the corporation agrees, where the roof is a common element. Your declaration and bylaws decide whether your roof is a common element or part of your unit, and who is responsible for it. If it is a common element, get the board's approval in writing before you sign anything, and make sure it covers who pays for future repair, maintenance and insurance. We can supply the specification sheets and warranty terms the board needs to decide.
How do the warranties apply to a condominium?
The manufacturer's Guardian warranty terms are the same for each building, but the board should read the full terms before it decides, because the ownership and transfer rules matter in a condominium. Our labour warranty covers the purchaser named on the certificate while that purchaser is the registered owner of, and lives at, the property. We give the board both documents in full with the quote.

What code evaluation covers the Interlock system?
ICC-ES evaluation report ESR-1790, held by the manufacturer, Interlock Roofing Ltd. It evaluates fire classification, wind-uplift resistance and weather resistance for the Shingle, Diamond, Shake and Hidden Fastener Tile panels under the International Building Code and International Residential Code. In the Maritimes, acceptance rests with the authority having jurisdiction under the provincial building code, so share the report early, and check the current version on the ICC-ES website.
What are the material specifications?
Per the manufacturer's ICC-ES report, the aluminum shingle and diamond panels are 3105-H24 alloy at 0.48 mm (0.019 in) base metal, and the shake and tile panels are 3003-H24 or 3105-H24 at 0.70 mm (0.0276 in). The finish is the Alunar® coating system, a 70% PVDF coating certified to AAMA 2605, with CRRC-rated colours. Installed weight is roughly 2 to 3.5 kg per square metre depending on profile.
How is the Class A assembly built?
Class A Fire Rated Available, as a complete assembly: Interlock aluminum over two layers of GAF VersaShield® fire-resistant underlayment on 12 mm (15/32-inch) plywood, classified under ASTM E108 per ICC-ES ESR-2053. In Canada the matching standard is CAN/ULC-S107. Specify the assembly, not the panel, because the classification belongs to the whole build-up, and ask us for it as a priced line in the quote.
What wind-uplift values are published?
The manufacturer's ICC-ES report ESR-1790 lists maximum allowable uplift loads that depend on the fastening system: up to 8.50 kPa (177.5 psf) for the shingle and diamond panels, 6.82 kPa (142.5 psf) for the hidden fastener tile panels and 5.51 kPa (115.0 psf) for the shake panels. Check the current report before you specify, especially for exposed coastal sites. The Guardian warranty warrants wind resistance to 193 km/h (120 mph) when installed to manufacturer specification.
Where can I get spec sheets, test reports and samples?
Email scott@peiroofing.com or call (782) 825-6416. The manufacturer publishes its test reports and certifications at interlockroofing.com, including the ICC-ES report and the impact test summary. We can bring samples and colours to a design meeting, in person or on Zoom, and price the roof in writing once the drawings are far enough along.
General contractors & builders
Working with us on new builds and renovations.
Do you work with builders and general contractors?
Talk to us about your project. Bring us in early in the design: slope (minimum 3/12 for every profile), the Class A Fire Rated Available assembly if the site needs it, snow guard locations and the deck are much easier to settle before framing than after. Email scott@peiroofing.com or call (782) 825-6416 with the drawings, location and schedule, and we will tell you how we can help and price the roof in writing.
What deck does an Interlock roof need?
A solid deck. For the Class A Fire Rated Available assembly, the deck is 12 mm (15/32-inch) plywood under two layers of GAF VersaShield®. The manufacturer's ICC-ES report sets a minimum 3:12 slope with code-compliant self-adhered underlayment. Confirm the deck and underlayment with us before framing so the roof goes on as specified.
Why should I ask any roofer for a workers' compensation clearance?
Because the hiring party can end up paying. WCB Nova Scotia says that if a contractor is not in good standing, the hiring business is jointly responsible for premiums, and WCB PEI says that without clearance, employers may be responsible for their contractor's WCB payments. WorkSafeNB offers an online clearance search. Ask every roofer, us included, for a current clearance letter and a liability insurance certificate that comes directly from the broker or insurer with the policy dates on it.
Government, institutional & procurement
Public and institutional work.
What should a procurement team verify about a roofing contractor in the Maritimes?
Start with coverage and identity. Verify workers' compensation coverage with a clearance from WCB Nova Scotia, WorkSafeNB or WCB PEI, liability insurance from the insurer, the contractor's legal name and street address, any municipal business licence, and the written warranty terms, including who issues each warranty and what it excludes. Our legal name is Maritime Metal Roofing Ltd., 101 Thornhill Dr #105, Dartmouth, NS B3B 1S2, and we are a BBB Accredited Business with an A+ rating.
Do you take on public-sector and institutional roofing projects?
Send us the details and we will tell you. Email the scope, location, schedule and submission requirements to scott@peiroofing.com. For a submission we can provide company documents, the manufacturer's published test and evaluation reports, and the warranty documents, and we can answer questions about workers' compensation clearance and liability insurance on request.
Is the product Canadian-made, and what is its recycled content?
Yes, it is made in Canada. The panels are manufactured by Interlock Roofing Ltd. at its plant in Delta, BC, and installed in the Maritimes by Maritime Metal Roofing Ltd., a Canadian owned and operated company. The aluminum has up to 95% recycled content, and the Alunar® colours are CRRC-rated, with published solar reflectance and thermal emittance values.
Buying for a parent & ageing in place
For families researching a roof for someone else.
I'm arranging a new roof for my parent. How do we start?
Book the free consultation for a time you can both be there, at the house or on Zoom, which works well when family members live in another province. We measure the roof, bring samples, answer questions and leave a fixed price in writing, with no obligation. Before anyone signs, check the contractor the same way you would for yourself: a Maritimes street address, a workers' compensation clearance, liability insurance and a warranty you can read in full.
What happens to the warranties if my parent moves into care or sells the house?
They change. Our labour warranty stays in effect while a purchaser named on the certificate is the registered owner of, and lives at, the property; if more than one purchaser is named, one of them must still own and live there. It is not transferable. The Guardian material warranty runs while the original purchaser owns the home and transfers once to the next registered owner, to 50 years from installation, with notice and proof of purchase within 60 days and a $300 fee.
What protections apply if my parent signs a roofing contract at home?
A 10-day cooling-off period, in each of the three provinces. The Government of Nova Scotia says a buyer from a direct seller can cancel for any reason within 10 days, and that direct sellers must be licensed. In New Brunswick, the Financial and Consumer Services Commission says the 10 days run from the day you receive the contract, and that direct sellers must, with some exceptions, be licensed and bonded under the Direct Sellers Act. Prince Edward Island's direct sales contract rules also allow cancellation until 10 days after you receive a copy of the contract.
How much upkeep will the roof need as my parent gets older?
Not much, and none of it needs a ladder if you plan for it. There is no re-treating as with cedar. Gutters need regular cleaning and debris should be removed promptly, ideally by a professional rather than a family member on a ladder. Dirt can be rinsed from the ground with a hose and a long-poled soft brush. Put snow guards over the entry and walkways, because snow slides off a metal roof.
How can we avoid roofing scams aimed at older homeowners?
Check who you are dealing with before anyone books work, especially after a big storm. Look for a Maritimes street address you can find on a map, a workers' compensation clearance you check yourself, liability insurance, a direct seller licence where the contract is sold at the door, and finished jobs in nearby towns. Make sure the quote, contract and warranty all name the same company, the one that installs the roof, and read the exclusions before signing.
Insurance, resale & rebates
Insurers, resale value and rebates.
Will a metal roof lower my home insurance?
That is up to your insurer, so ask them before you assume a discount. Some insurers take the roof into account and some don't, and terms change. What we can give you is the documentation they may ask for: the wind resistance warranted to 193 km/h (120 mph) when installed to manufacturer specification, the impact listing by Intertek for the aluminum panels, the Class A Fire Rated Available assembly details if you choose it, and the manufacturer's warranty documents.
Does a metal roof increase my home's resale value?
We can't promise a number, and nobody honestly can. What a buyer gets is concrete: the manufacturer's Guardian material warranty transfers once, giving the next registered owner coverage to 50 years from installation, if notice and proof of purchase reach the manufacturer within 60 days of the sale with the $300 transfer fee. Keep your registration and contract with the house papers.
Are there rebates for a metal roof in the Maritimes?
Don't count on one. We don't promise any rebate, and our own offers, when there is one, are promotions with their own terms and end dates, shown on our home page and financing page. Government and utility programs change, so check with your province, your municipality and your insurer before you rely on any rebate for a new roof.
