Roof replacement on Prince Edward Island

Replace an asphalt, cedar or tile roof on Prince Edward Island with the Interlock® aluminum roofing system: one visit, one fixed price in writing, and the last roof replacement your house is likely to need.

What replacing a roof with us involves

One visit first, at your house or on Zoom to start. We measure the roof, look at the deck and framing where we can, go through profiles and colours with you, and give you a fixed price in writing. Anything that needs attention underneath goes into that written quote, not into a change order later.

On install, the Interlock® aluminum system goes on: panels that lock to each other on all four sides with the fasteners concealed, so there is no exposed screw head or loose edge for wind, driven rain, snow or salt spray to work on.

Tear-off or roof-over?

Cedar shingles and shakes, concrete tile and natural slate always come off. A single layer of asphalt shingles can sometimes be roofed over, but only if our inspection finds the roof suitable: no rot, no soft decking, nothing trapped underneath that should come out. If it isn't suitable, the tear-off is in the written price from the start.

Replacing asphalt, cedar or tile

Whatever comes off, Interlock's Slate, Cedar Shingle, Shake, Mediterranean Tile and Standing Seam profiles give you the look you want at roughly 2 to 3.5 kg per square metre, a fraction of concrete tile. Every profile needs a minimum 3/12 roof slope. Slate suits a century home as well as a new build, and Shake and Cedar Shingle keep the look of a shingled cottage.

We install one roofing system. We don't install asphalt shingles, so if you're comparing us with an asphalt re-roof, you're comparing a roof you'll replace again with one that shouldn't need it.

Built for salt air, wind and Maritimes winters

Salt air, wind-driven rain, winter coastal storms and freeze-thaw are what wear a roof out here. Salt air is highly corrosive to steel once its coating is scratched; aluminum forms a thin, tough oxide layer that seals the metal and cannot rust. The panels lock on all four sides with no tab to lift, and wind resistance is warranted to 193 km/h (120 mph) installed to manufacturer specification. Post-tropical storms are part of life here: Hurricane Fiona in September 2022 caused over $800 million in insured damage, the most costly extreme weather event ever recorded in Atlantic Canada, according to the Insurance Bureau of Canada. Damage from hurricane-force winds is a matter for your home insurance and is excluded from our labour warranty.

Aluminum absorbs no water, so there is nothing for freeze-thaw to split. The panels shed heavy wet snow rather than hold it; where snow sliding off would land on an entry, a deck or a walkway, we plan snow guards at the estimate.

Ice dams come from heat escaping into the attic and from ventilation, not from the roof covering, and no roof prevents them on its own. We look at your attic ventilation and insulation with you at the visit.

The warranty, in plain language

The manufacturer's Guardian Lifetime Limited Material Warranty covers material and finish for as long as the original purchaser owns the home, and transfers once. Workmanship is excluded from that warranty; our installation is covered separately by our own 10 Year Limited Labour Warranty, which is not transferable. Ice damming is a stated exclusion of the material warranty. Read the full terms before you sign.

Wind resistance is warranted to 193 km/h (120 mph) when installed to manufacturer specification.

Questions, answered

How long does a roof replacement take?

It depends on the size and complexity of the roof and what is underneath. You get a realistic install window in writing at the estimate, not after the deposit.

Do I need a permit to replace my roof on Prince Edward Island?

It depends on your municipality and the scope of work. Like-for-like re-roofing and work that changes the sheathing or structure can be treated differently, and each province's building code is based on the National Building Code of Canada. We check what your municipality requires for your address at the estimate, and the contract says who gets the permit.

Will my insurer give me a discount for a metal roof?

Ask your insurer. Some insurers take the roof into account and some don't; we don't promise a discount. We can give you the product and warranty documents they may ask for.

Can you install a metal roof over my shingles?

Sometimes. A single layer of asphalt can be roofed over only if the inspection finds it suitable. Cedar, concrete tile and natural slate always come off.

How do I get a price?
